Hong Kong Tramples on Trangender Rights – Yet Again

It is well known that the Hong Kong government is particularly mean towards transgenders whom it periodically stigmatises as 人妖s or “human monsters”Now, a trans woman is battling the government for the right to marry her boyfriend.  Why is the Hong Kong government so mean-spirited?  Even China has got more enlightened policies that protect the rights of transgenders.  I suspect it has got something to do with the rise of Christian fundamentalism in Hong Kong.  They really are quite frightening because their tactics are startlingly similar to those of their Singapore counterparts during the Aware saga earlier this year.  Unlike the latter however, Hong Kong’s fundis may be more like to gain “moral” ground because the country does not have a diversity of ethnic groups and religions to provide some form of counterbalance.  China is precisely so open to transgenders because it is a communist country that frowns on organised religion (which is not necessarily a good thing but if you subscribe to my belief that religious beliefs are the root of all evil*, it is not necessarily a bad thing either).

Christian fundamentalists need to create a visible Satan to sustain their warped view of God and since they do not have the guts (although they would love to) to take on other religions or “false prophets”, they have found easy victims in transsexual women.  It helps that the slur 人妖 already supports the notion of Lucifer.

* religious belief as opposed to spirituality, faith, a belief in God.

  1. Hate to hear that.

As I tell people here, having faith in a higher power is a good thing and so is having a religious part of your life.

The problem is the FUNDAMENTALIST strains of the various world religions that cause much of the drama, tension and strife on our planet.
